Thank you for tutoring Abby. She used to hate reading, but now somewhat enjoys reading. Thank you for giving her an understanding of phonics.
I have a 12 year old, 7th grade daughter that I've been homeschooling since 2nd grade. It was apparent from 1st grade that reading wasn't going to be an easy subject for her to master. She has always struggled to decode new words. Also, she randomly, but consistently seems to leave off prefixes and suffixes while reading out loud, as well as interchanging small words such as "it" and "is".
Despite everything I've tried, these problems persisted. I began believing I wasn't capable of teaching my daughter and that I had "ruined" her reading by homeschooling her.
Then I heard about Rene! Rene tested my daughter's Phonics knowledge as well as her reading and reading comprehension. She tutored us both for 10 sessions, focusing on the gaps my daughter had in her phonics knowledge and also in her spelling rules...as well as teaching me how to teach all of my children the rules of Phonics better.
While my daughter still struggles with these issues, Rene reassured me that she was reading on grade level, and that with persistence and continued hard work at home, everything was going to be okay.
In other words, I hadn't ruined my daughter's chance of being a strong reader! This gave me the confidence to continue homeschooling. Thank you Rene!
My 8 year old son, who is now a third grader, is a much more confident reader thanks to Mrs. Armbruster. We began working with Mrs. Armbruster last year after his teacher expressed some concerns, and we noticed a difference in his confidence and enthusiasm right away.
Prior to working with Mrs. Armbruster, reading was always a chore for my son. He would struggle through it every day at school and every night at home with us. We had a hard time motivating him to practice.
Mrs. Armbruster was able to slowly build his confidence by working with him on reinforcing basic building blocks of reading. She broke things down for him so he could recognize and practice various combinations of sounds. Over time, this enabled him to gain more and more confidence, and eventually he was enjoying reading!
She made it fun for him and was able to motivate him to keep working on his reading skills. He looked forward to coming to see her every week.
This year, my son has been like a different kid! He looks forward to reading independently every night, and has no struggles at school. Mrs. Armbruster really enabled him to turn a corner with his reading, and now we feel that he's on a path of success for the long term. Her approach with him was invaluable, and we can't thank her enough!!
My daughter first started working with Rene when she was in middle school and still a struggling reader. It was always challenging and Rene was always consistent and positive and encouraging - for both of us! My daughter worked with Rene through her Senior year of high school, improving skills and learning ways to manage reading needs.
It was not until after high school that she really began to read on her own for pleasure and this really started with requirement to read anything at all for a minimum of 20 minutes a day. It took just the first 20 minutes to get her started and I'm happy to say she loves to read, even if it may be a little more slowly.
I'm even more proud to say that my daughter completed a Bachelor or Arts in English, Education Emphasis - though it took more than 4 years to do this. She is now starting her first year as a middle school Language Arts teacher!
No one knows better than her what a critical stage middle school can be - and what a difference having a teacher who is positive and encouraging can be. We can't thank Rene enough!
Please share how your child was struggling with reading but with tutoring has made progress. Include your child's comments (if they are willing).
